Hereditary 2018
Horror dramaIndependentPsychological thriller
A 2018 American supernatural psychological horror film, Hereditary was written and directed by Ari Aster in his first feature film effort. The movie stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne. It tells the story of Annie Graham (Collette), a miniature artist dealing with grief after her mother's death, who discovers unsettling family secrets. She and her husband Steve (Byrne) face disturbing paranormal events along with their children, Peter (Wolff) and Charlie (Shapiro).
A24 recognized Aster’s talent through his short horror films, particularly The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, leading to funding for Hereditary as his debut full-length project. Aster envisioned the film primarily as a family drama structured in two clear segments. Principal filming took place in Salt Lake City during February 2017, using custom-built sets on a soundstage to achieve a dollhouse appearance.
The movie made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2018 before opening in theaters across the United States on June 8. Critics praised the film, especially Collette’s acting performance. It proved commercially successful, earning $90 million compared to its $10 million production cost. Hereditary is often cited among the most frightening films ever produced.
