Biographical dramaHistorical

A 2018 American biographical drama film, First Man follows the life of Neil Armstrong leading up to the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. It is directed by Damien Chazelle and features a screenplay written by Josh Singer, adapted from James R. Hansen's 2005 biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, with supporting roles played by Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott, and Ciarán Hinds.

The film’s development began in 2003 when Clint Eastwood was set to direct, but that version never moved forward. By 2015, Chazelle, Gosling, and Singer had all joined the project. Principal photography commenced in Atlanta during November 2017. First Man premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2018 and opened in the United States on October 12 through Universal Pictures.

Critics praised the direction, performances by Gosling and Foy, musical score, and the Moon landing scene. Despite this acclaim, the film underperformed at the box office, earning $105.7 million worldwide against its $59 million budget. It received multiple honors, including four nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, winning Best Visual Effects.
