Romantic comedy-drama

A 2018 American romantic comedy drama film, Crazy Rich Asians was directed by Jon M. Chu and features a screenplay written by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, adapted from Kevin Kwan's 2013 novel. The movie stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh. It tells the story of Rachel, a Chinese American professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick and is surprised to learn that his family belongs to one of the wealthiest in the country.

The project was announced in August 2012 following acquisition of the book’s rights. Major cast members joined in spring 2017, and principal photography occurred from April through June of that year across Singapore, Malaysia, and New York City. This film marked the first major Hollywood production with a predominantly Chinese descent cast set in modern times since The Joy Luck Club in 1993. While praised in the U.S. for its Asian representation, it also faced criticism for including few actors from Singapore, Southeast Asia, or those fully ethnically Chinese; for not accurately depicting Singapore’s diverse racial makeup, and some argued that it reinforced stereotypes about East Asians.

Crazy Rich Asians had its premiere on August 7, 2018 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and opened in U.S. theaters on August 15, 2018 through Warner Bros. Pictures. The film earned over $238 million despite a $30 million budget, becoming the top-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s. Critics commended the acting, script, and production design. It was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy), three NAACP Image Awards (including Outstanding Motion Picture), four Critics' Choice Awards (winning Best Comedy), and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Additionally, two sequels based on the novels China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems have been in various stages of development for more than seven years.
