Aquaman 2018
A 2018 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Arthur Curry / Aquaman, Aquaman was produced by DC Films, Warner Bros. Pictures, and The Safran Company and marks the sixth entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, the movie stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, who takes on the role of leading the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. His mission is to prevent his evil half-brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson), from uniting the seven underwater kingdoms against the surface world. Supporting roles are played by Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman.
Development started in 2004 but only gained momentum after Man of Steel premiered in 2013. In August 2014, Beall and Kurt Johnstad were brought in to develop competing scripts. Wan committed as director in April 2015, and the project moved forward in July 2016 using Beall’s screenplay. Casting was finalized through 2016 and early 2017. Principal photography commenced in Australia in May 2017 at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, Queensland, with additional filming locations in Canada, Italy, and Morocco. The production wrapped up in October of the following year. Visual effects and animation were handled by various vendors, including detailed hair simulations and CGI animals and environments.
Aquaman premiered in London on November 26, 2018 and opened in the United States on December 21. Critics gave it mixed to positive reviews, and it grossed $1.152 billion worldwide. It became the highest-grossing DCEU film, the highest-grossing superhero movie based on a DC Comics character, the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2018, and at the time of release, the 20th highest-grossing film ever made. A sequel titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was released on December 22, 2023. Additionally, an animated non-canonical miniseries called Aquaman: King of Atlantis is set after this film’s events and was released in October 2021.
