The Turning 2020
SupernaturalSupernatural horror
A 2020 American gothic supernatural horror film, The Turning stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, and Joely Richardson. It follows a young governess in 1994 hired to care for two children after their parents die. The film adapts the 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and was written by Carey W. Hayes and Chad Hayes, directed by Floria Sigismondi. Development began in March 2016 as a passion project for Steven Spielberg, who wished to return to horror filmmaking. Initially titled Haunted with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as director, it later became The Turning under Sigismondi's direction. Principal photography occurred at Killruddery House in County Wicklow, Ireland from February through April 2018. The film had its premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on January 23, 2020 and opened theatrically in the United States on January 24, 2020 via Universal Pictures. Critics gave it negative reviews, and it performed poorly commercially, earning only $19.4 million worldwide against a $14 million budget.
