IndependentScience fiction horror

A 2020 science fiction horror film, The Invisible Man is written and directed by Leigh Whannell. The movie adapts H. G. Wells's 1897 novel and features Elisabeth Moss as a woman who suspects her violent ex-boyfriend (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is stalking her after he gains the power to turn invisible. Supporting cast includes Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, and Michael Dorman.

Work on a modern version of the story started in 2006, but was paused in 2011. A second attempt in 2016 as part of Universal Pictures's Dark Universe was cancelled after The Mummy failed both critically and financially in 2017. Universal shifted focus to individual films, allowing the project to restart in 2019 with Whannell returning as director.

The Invisible Man had its premiere in Hollywood, California on February 24, 2020, followed by a U.S. theatrical release on February 28, 2020. Critics responded positively, highlighting Whannell's direction, Moss’s acting, the opening scene, tone, soundtrack, and portrayal of domestic violence. The film earned $145 million globally against a $7 million budget. Due to the early closure of theaters because of the COVID-19 outbreak, it became available for digital rental three weeks after its initial release in the United States.
