A 2020 supernatural horror film, The Empty Man stars James Badge Dale, Joel Courtney, Marin Ireland, Robert Aramayo, and Stephen Root. It is directed, written, and co-edited by David Prior in his first feature film effort. Based on the graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Rey from Boom! Studios, the story centers around an ex-cop investigating a missing girl who uncovers a secret cult. Filmed in August 2017, this international production involved the United States, South Africa, and United Kingdom. Distributor 20th Century Fox became disenchanted after test screenings and lost confidence in its box office potential. The final version premiered in the U.S. on October 23, 2020, though Prior noted it remained a rough cut. Released during the height of the COVID-19 crisis, the movie earned $4 million globally against a $16 million budget. Initial critical response was largely unfavorable, but later reception grew more favorable. Some outlets reported that The Empty Man developed a cult audience following its home video and streaming availability.
