Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2020 action-adventure comedy film derived from the Sonic video game franchise. It marks the inaugural entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. The film was directed by Jeff Fowler during his first feature film as director, written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and features James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Neal McDonough, and Jim Carrey. Jason Schwartz voices Sonic, a blue hedgehog with the ability to run at supersonic speeds. Sonic partners with Tom Wachowski, the town sheriff played by Marsden, in order to stop Dr. Robotnik, portrayed by Carrey, from dominating the world.

The development of a Sonic movie began in 1990s, but it only advanced past early planning when Sony Pictures secured the film rights in 2013. Fowler was brought on board in 2016. When Sony placed the project into turnaround, Paramount Pictures picked it up in 2017. The majority of the cast committed by August 2018. Principal photography occurred from September to October of that year in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, with an intended release date of November 8, 2019. After a negative response to the film’s initial trailer—wherein Sonic seemed to appear as a real hedgehog—Paramount postponed the film by three months to rework Sonic’s appearance so it would more closely match his original video game design.

Sonic the Hedgehog made its debut at the Paramount Pictures studio lot on January 25, 2020. It had a theatrical release in the United States on February 14 and in Japan on June 26, receiving mixed reviews. The movie established a record for the highest opening weekend for any video game-based film in the United States and Canada, earning worldwide. It ranked as the sixth most profitable film of 2020 and the top-grossing video game adaptation in North America. This was succeeded by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), and a television miniseries titled Knuckles (2024).
