One Night in Miami... 2020
A 2020 American drama film, One Night in Miami... was directed by Regina King in her first feature film effort, and adapted from a 2013 stage play written by Kemp Powers. The story is a dramatized recreation of an event that took place on February 25, 1964, when Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke met at the Hampton House. This gathering occurred shortly after Ali's unexpected victory over Sonny Liston. Leading roles are played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr., with supporting performances from Lance Reddick, Joaquina Kalukango, Nicolette Robinson, and Beau Bridges.
The film premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2020, marking a notable moment as it was the first time an African-American woman directed a film in the festival’s history. It opened in limited theaters across the United States through Amazon Studios on December 25, 2020, followed by a digital release on Amazon Prime Video on January 15, 2021. Critics commended the direction by King, especially the acting—particularly that of Ben-Adir and Odom—and Powers's screenplay. One Night in Miami... earned three nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor for Odom, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Song ("Speak Now"). Additionally, King received nods for the Golden Globe Award for Best Director and the Critics Choice Award for Best Director.
