A 2020 American drama film, Nomadland was written, directed, edited and co-produced by Chloé Zhao. The movie is based on the 2017 nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder and features Frances McDormand portraying a widow who abandons her life in Nevada to travel across the United States in her van. Several real-life nomads appear as fictionalized versions of themselves, including Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells. David Strathairn also appears in a supporting role.

The film made its debut on September 11, 2020 at the Venice Film Festival, where it received the Golden Lion award. It was also awarded the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Nomadland had a limited one-week streaming release on December 4, 2020, followed by distribution through Searchlight Pictures in selected IMAX theaters across the United States on January 29, 2021. Simultaneously, it opened in theaters and became available for digital streaming via Hulu on February 19, 2021. The production was both critically praised and financially successful, earning $39 million globally while its budget was $5 million.

At the 93rd Academy Awards, Nomadland took home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for McDormand, out of six total nominations. Zhao achieved the distinction of being the second woman and first Asian woman to win Best Director, as well as the first individual nominated in four categories within a single year. McDormand became the first woman and fourth person to win Academy Awards for both acting and producing roles, and also the first to win awards as both producer and performer for the same film. This marked the first time a Searchlight release won Best Picture since the studio's acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets under Walt Disney Studios. The film also earned Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, four awards including Best Film at the 74th British Academy Film Awards, and four awards such as Best Film at the 36th Independent Spirit Awards. It has since been recognized as one of the best films of the 2020s and 21st centuries.
