Biographical drama

Hillbilly Elegy is a 2020 American biographical drama film produced by Imagine Entertainment and directed by Ron Howard. It features a screenplay written by Vanessa Taylor, adapted from the 2016 memoir of the same name by JD Vance, who served as vice president of the United States. The movie includes Amy Adams and Glenn Close in leading roles, with Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, and Bo Hopkins appearing in supporting parts; Bo Hopkins made this his final film performance. Owen Asztalos also starred in key roles.

In 2017, Imagine Entertainment purchased the rights to Vance’s book and announced Howard as director. By January 2019, Netflix had secured distribution rights, with most of the cast confirmed in April. Principal photography occurred from June through August in Georgia and Ohio.

The film premiered in limited theaters on November 11, 2020 before its streaming release on November 24 by Netflix. Critics gave it poor reviews, and it received three Golden Raspberry Award nominations: Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Supporting Actress (Close). Nevertheless, the movie was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Supporting Actress (Close) at the 93rd Academy Awards. Close earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, while Adams’s performance was recognized with a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination as well.
