Friend of the World is a 2020 American experimental comedy horror film that marks the feature film debut of Brian Patrick Butler as writer and director. The movie stars Nick Young and Alexandra Slade, and follows a post-apocalyptic narrative involving a young filmmaker and a military general trapped in a bunker with an unknown danger.
Originally conceived as a dark comedy body horror film in 2016, the project was produced by Charybdis Pictures. Themes drawn from nuclear war fears and contemporary politics informed its creation, while influences included Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, John Carpenter, and David Cronenberg.
Principal photography occurred at Gray Area Multimedia and other locations within San Diego County during May 2017. The film had its premiere August 15, 2020 at the Oceanside International Film Festival and became available through video on demand in 2021. Distribution was handled by Cineverse and Troma Entertainment.
Critics drew comparisons to Night of the Living Dead, Dr. Strangelove, The Lighthouse, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. It received an approval rating from reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, placing among their top horror and science fiction films of 2021 and ranking in their 100 Best Zombie Movies list.
