War drama

Da 5 Bloods is a 2020 American war drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Spike Lee. The movie features Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Jean Reno and Chadwick Boseman (in his final film released during his lifetime). Its story centers on four older Vietnam War veterans who revisit the region to recover the remains of their deceased squad leader, along with treasure they had hidden while deployed.

The screenplay was initially developed by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo in 2013. It was then revised by Lee and Kevin Willmott after their successful partnership on BlacKkKlansman (2018). Actors signed on in February 2019, with principal photography starting a month later, concluding in June across Southeast Asia. The production cost reached $35–45 million, making it one of Lee’s most costly projects.

Da 5 Bloods premiered through Netflix on June 12, 2020. Critics responded positively, highlighting the direction, themes, and acting—particularly from Lindo, Peters, and Boseman. Many regarded it as among Lee’s strongest efforts. The film earned several honors, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Additionally, it was named the Best Film of 2020 by the National Board of Review.
