Action comedyBuddy comedy

Bad Boys for Life is a 2020 American buddy cop action comedy film serving as the sequel to Bad Boys II from 2003 and the third entry in the franchise. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return in their main roles, with the film directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, produced by Smith, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Doug Belgrad, and featuring a screenplay written by Chris Bremner, Peter Craig, and Joe Carnahan. The story was developed by Craig and Carnahan. Theresa Randle and Joe Pantoliano reprise earlier parts, while Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Charles Melton, Kate del Castillo, and Nicky Jam join the cast. The plot follows Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett as they investigate a series of killings connected to Lowrey’s difficult history.

Plans for a third Bad Boys movie were considered after the second film released in 2003, with Michael Bay expressing interest in returning to direct. However, financial limitations caused delays. Over time, numerous writers and directors were involved before finalizing the project in October 2018. Principal photography started in June 2019 and wrapped up by January of the following year, taking place in Atlanta, Miami, and Mexico City.

The film premiered in the United States on January 17, 2020 under the banner of Sony Pictures Releasing. Critics responded positively, and it earned $426.5 million globally. It became the third-highest-grossing January release ever and topped domestic box office charts for 2020, making it the highest-earning film in the franchise. A follow-up titled Bad Boys: Ride or Die hit theaters on June 7, 2024.
