Horror thrillerIndependentSlasher
A 2022 American slasher film, X is written, directed, produced, and edited by Ti West. The movie features Mia Goth in dual roles as Maxine, a young woman, and Pearl, an elderly woman. Supporting cast members include Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi. The story takes place in 1979 on a rural Texas property where a film crew gathers to shoot a pornographic movie.
A24 announced X in November 2020, with principal photography taking place in February–March 2021 around Fordell, New Zealand. Actor Goth wore extensive prosthetic makeup for the role of Pearl, while special effects were used for violent sequences. The film is noted as a modern interpretation of psycho-biddy horror, blending elements from horror, exploitation, and adult cinema, with themes focusing on beauty, aging, and identity. The musical score was composed by Tyler Bates and Chelsea Wolfe.
X premiered worldwide at South by Southwest on March 13, 2022, followed by a theatrical release in the U.S. five days later through A24. Critics responded positively to the film. It begins the X film series, succeeded by Pearl (September 2022) and MaXXXine (July 2024).
