The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks 2022
The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks is a 2022 Canadian documentary film directed by Reginald Harkema. It was released to coincide with Amazon Prime’s relaunch of the influential Canadian sketch comedy series. The film draws partially from Paul Myers's 2018 book The Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy, as noted by Jim Slotek in Original Cin, April 27, 2022. It chronicles the group’s history using archival material and recent interviews with the troupe members, primarily filmed at The Rivoli in Toronto, where they first performed. Dennis Harvey reviewed the film for Variety, April 30, 2022.
The documentary also features commentary from various actors and comedians on the group's impact, including Fred Armisen, Jay Baruchel, Lewis Black, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Mae Martin, Mike Myers, Eric McCormack, and Lorne Michaels. Anna Smith wrote about it for Deadline Hollywood, March 16, 2022.
The film made its debut on March 15, 2022 at the SXSW festival and had its Canadian premiere at the 2022 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, ahead of its release on Amazon on May 20 to support the new season of the series.
It received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series at the 11th Canadian Screen Awards in 2023, as reported by Jackson Weaver in CBC News, April 11, 2023. Rachel Ho wrote a review for Exclaim!, April 29, 2022.
