Serious Sam: Tormental 2022
Serious Sam: Tormental is a 2022 twin-stick shooter and rogue-lite video game developed by Gungrounds and published by Devolver Digital. Players control one or two characters moving through randomly created levels across multiple stages inside Mental's mind, the main villain of the Serious Sam franchise. Each player uses two weapons at once, with the primary weapon able to be upgraded using "mods" scattered throughout the game. Character choices are unlockable and each has a dodge roll and a special ability. When a character dies, the player restarts from the beginning of the game. After finishing all stages, players can use black keys to open vaults for power-ups. The stages then repeat with higher difficulty.
Gungrounds first created Spitfire Inferno, drawing inspiration from Geometry Wars. After showing the game at various gaming conventions, the studio joined Croteam Incubator, leading to a larger team and a change in theme toward the Serious Sam series. Spitfire Inferno was later renamed Tormental and then Serious Sam: Tormental. It launched in early access in April 2019 and officially released in April 2022. Reviews were mixed, with recognition for its humor, visuals, and combat, but criticism over technical problems, repetition, and lack of originality.
