Return to Monkey Island 2022
Return to Monkey Island is a 2022 point-and-click adventure game developed by Terrible Toybox and published by Devolver Digital in association with Lucasfilm Games. It is the sixth entry in the Monkey Island series, and made its debut for macOS, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on September 19, 2022. Additional ports followed for Linux, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, iOS, and Android. The narrative centers on Guybrush Threepwood, the recurring hero of the series, who seeks to uncover the genuine mystery of Monkey Island.
This game marks the first Monkey Island title created by the series' originator, Ron Gilbert, since 1991's Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. It continues directly from that game’s storyline. Gilbert had contributed to the initial two Monkey Island games before departing LucasArts in 1992. Subsequent entries were produced by LucasArts and Telltale Games without him. The Walt Disney Company gained control of the Monkey Island franchise upon acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012. In 2019, Gilbert negotiated a new Monkey Island project with designer Dave Grossman, who had also worked on the first two titles. Return to Monkey Island was unveiled in April 2022. Dominic Armato returned as Guybrush Threepwood. The game garnered mostly favorable reviews.
