Tactical role-playing

Marvel's Midnight Suns is a 2022 tactical role-playing video game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K. The title includes characters from various Marvel Comics properties, including Midnight Sons, Avengers, X-Men, and Runaways. Players control a custom superhero called "The Hunter," who leads other characters in opposing Lilith, the "mother of demons," as she tries to resurrect her master, Chthon. Combat uses turn-based mechanics combined with deck-building elements. During breaks between missions, players manage their base known as "The Abbey," where they can move around in a third-person perspective, research upgrades, communicate with characters, and develop relationships with them.

Marvel Games contacted Firaxis Games to work on a new Marvel project in 2017 following the success of modern XCOM titles. The initial team tried to use the XCOM formula, including cover systems and permadeath, but abandoned those elements because they did not fit well with the theme of powerful superheroes. Deck-building gameplay was influenced by Slay the Spire, while social features were inspired by Japanese RPGs like Fire Emblem and Persona. The overall design drew inspiration from Saturday morning cartoons, and events such as Rise of the Midnight Sons and Inferno shaped both the setting and character development.

Midnight Suns launched on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on December 2, 2022. Versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were later released on May 11, 2023. A Nintendo Switch edition was also in development but eventually canceled. Critics responded positively to the strategic gameplay, story, and character relationship systems, although some found the writing lacking. The game was nominated for Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year at the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. Even though it received strong praise from reviewers, it underperformed commercially for its publisher. Firaxis later released four downloadable content expansions featuring the Midnight Suns battling Dracula and his vampire armies.
