Elden Ring 2022
Elden Ring is a 2022 action role-playing video game that was developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was initially released on February 25, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on August 28, 2026. The game is directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who worked alongside the American fantasy writer George R. R. Martin to build its world. Players control a customizable character within the Lands Between, aiming to mend the Elden Ring and claim the title of Elden Lord.
The gameplay uses a third-person view, allowing players to freely explore an open world. The six main regions can be navigated using the player’s steed Torrent. Hidden linear dungeons are scattered throughout for exploration, offering useful items. Combat involves various weapons and magic spells, with stealth mechanics supporting non-confrontational approaches. Checkpoints are placed across the world, enabling fast travel and allowing players to upgrade their character using an in-game currency known as runes. An online multiplayer component lets players cooperate or compete in boss battles or PvP encounters.
FromSoftware aimed to make an open-world game inspired by Dark Souls. Miyazaki appreciated Martin's earlier work and hoped his involvement would create a more accessible narrative compared to previous titles from the studio. Martin was granted creative freedom for the lore, while Miyazaki took on the role of lead writer for the in-game story. The development team prioritized both environmental scale and storytelling, requiring the creation of numerous structures throughout the game's world.
Elden Ring received multiple Game of the Year awards and is often considered one of the greatest games ever made. Critics praised its open world, gameplay systems, and overall setting. It sold over 30 million copies, becoming among the top-selling titles in history. A downloadable expansion titled Shadow of the Erdtree was released in June 2024, achieving similar acclaim and selling more than ten million copies. In 2025, a spinoff game focused on multiplayer, Elden Ring Nightreign, was launched. Additionally, a film adaptation is currently in production and set for release in 2028.
