Dorfromantik 2022
Dorfromantik is a 2022 strategy puzzle video game developed and published by Toukana Interactive. Players arrange hexagonal tiles representing elements of a rural setting to build a landscape. Points and extra tiles are earned by aligning matching sides of tiles, enclosing fields, forests, and villages, and finishing quests that define contiguous areas. A creative mode lets players design their own environments.
The game was created by four German and Swiss students enrolled in a game design master's program at HTW Berlin: Timo Falcke, Sandro Heuberger, Luca Langenberg, and Zwi Zausch. They formed Toukana with the goal of making a calm, simple game, seeing it potentially as their final opportunity to collaborate without outside distractions. Dorfromantik began as one of several small prototypes in early 2020, but gained attention after inclusion in an Itch.io game bundle and became the team’s main focus. The name derives from an older German term meaning "village romanticization", reflecting a sentimental view of rural life. Its visual style draws inspiration from romanticist and impressionist paintings as well as city-building games.
Dorfromantik launched as an early access title in March 2021, which brought increased visibility, along with recognition through awards and nominations. After multiple updates, the complete version was released for Windows in April 2022. It later came to Nintendo Switch in September 2022, followed by ports for PlayStation and Xbox consoles in August 2025 and macOS in June 2026. Critics responded positively to its visual design and presentation but were divided on gameplay depth.
A cooperative board game adaptation titled Dorfromantik: The Board Game was published by Pegasus Spiele in February 2023 and received the Spiel des Jahres award that year. Additional versions followed, including a competitive two-player variant called Dorfromantik: The Duel in February 2024.
