Butterfly Soup 2 2022
Butterfly Soup 2 is a visual novel released in October 2022 for Windows, macOS, and Linux, developed by Brianna Lei. It serves as the sequel to the 2017 Butterfly Soup and continues shortly after the first game's ending. The narrative follows four LGBT Asian-American girls living in Fremont, California, shifting between their freshman year of high school in 2009 and childhood experiences. Central to the story is the romance between Akarsha and her friend Noelle, exploring challenges with parental expectations, immigrant identity, and second-generation struggles.
Lei began developing the game five years after the original, incorporating plotlines and elements originally excluded from the first game. Her aim was to depict a more complex relationship than in Butterfly Soup, while drawing from her own experiences as an LGBT, second-generation Asian-American. Critics recognized the game’s writing and narrative depth, particularly its treatment of thematic content and character development. It received a nomination for the Excellence in Narrative award at the 2023 Independent Games Festival and was named "Best LGBTQ Indie Game" of 2022 by Gayming Magazine.
