Prehistoric Planet is a nature documentary-style television series that debuted on Apple TV starting May 23, 2022. The initial two seasons, from 2022 through 23, were made by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, with Jon Favreau serving as showrunner. Visual effects were created by The Moving Picture Company, and the narration is done by natural historian Sir David Attenborough. These early seasons portray dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures using computer-generated imagery, showing them living across the world during the Late Cretaceous period 66 million years ago (Maastrichtian), shortly before non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. The series attempts to show how these species behaved based on current paleontological findings. A third season titled Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age, featuring narration by Tom Hiddleston and focusing on Pleistocene megafauna, was released in 2025. The musical score was written by Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve, and Anže Rozman. This series marks the most prominent dinosaur-themed documentary from BBC since Planet Dinosaur in 2011, sharing a similar format with the acclaimed Walking with Dinosaurs from 1999. Critics praised its visual effects, dinosaur portrayals, and Attenborough’s narration.
