Ancient Apocalypse 2022
Ancient Apocalypse is a television series made by Netflix, labeled as a documentary, in which British writer Graham Hancock promotes his pseudoarchaeological views about an advanced society existing during the last ice age. According to Hancock, this civilization was wiped out by meteor impacts approximately 12,000 years ago. He claims that survivors shared their knowledge with early hunter-gatherer groups, leading to the development of the world's first civilizations. The show follows Hancock as he travels to various archaeological and geological sites, asserting they support his theory. He often accuses mainstream archaeologists of dismissing or hiding such evidence.
The program presents unverified theories, selective data, and omits contrary findings. Experts and scholars have criticized it for undermining Indigenous achievements. Some non-academic reviewers also dismissed the ideas as implausible, pointing out Hancock's criticisms of traditional archaeology as biased and reminiscent of conspiracy thinking. Certain experts who appeared in the first season stated that their contributions were misrepresented in the editing.
The initial season, produced by ITN Productions, premiered on Netflix in November 2022. A second season, including actor Keanu Reeves, focuses on the Americas and was released in October 2024.
