ai_sponge 2023
Ai sponge, known also as "AI SpongeBob", consisted of two Twitch and YouTube channels that mocked the American animated show SpongeBob SquarePants. These channels were created to function continuously through livestreaming, utilizing artificially produced gestures, speech, and conversations from characters. Their content was partly shaped by unfiltered suggestions from internet chat. Consequently, unusual dialogues emerged, particularly those involving sexual themes, leading to multiple platform bans due to service agreement violations. The primary channel now shows as "unavailable" on Twitch and was removed on YouTube. During its operation, the channels raised questions about how closely AI can mirror original content before crossing into copyright issues, and explored consequences of applying AI for automated entertainment. This topic contributed to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
