SpySpy dramaSpy thriller

A historical black comedy-drama television miniseries, The Sympathizer is based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Created by co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, with Park directing the first three episodes, the series premiered on HBO on April 14, 2024. Produced by A24 and Rhombus Media, it received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The performances and direction were praised, though some criticism was directed at its pacing and accuracy in Vietnamese accents. Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards for his role. The Sympathizer follows the Captain, a North Vietnamese spy operating undercover within the South Vietnamese army. As the Vietnam War concludes, he escapes to the United States and settles among South Vietnamese refugees in Southern California. He continues spying on this community while reporting to the Communist government, caught between his original loyalties and his new existence.
