Drama

Shōgun is a 2024 American historical drama series developed by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. It adapts the 1975 novel by James Clavell, previously adapted as a 1980 miniseries. The show features an ensemble cast including Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido. The production employs a predominantly Japanese cast, with most of the dialogue delivered in Japanese.

The series began as a miniseries format. Its first two episodes aired on February 27, 2024 on FX on Hulu and FX, followed by weekly releases until April 23, 2024. Critics praised the show for its direction, writing, cinematography, production design, acting, and loyalty to the original work. The success led to development of seasons two and three, with principal filming for season two commencing in January 2026.

The first season of Shōgun made history by becoming the first Japanese-language series to win Outstanding Drama Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. It captured 18 awards in that category and 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards, marking the most recognized single season in Emmy history. Additionally, it earned four Golden Globe Awards, including Best Television Series – Drama, along with acting wins for Sanada, Sawai, and Asano. The first season also received a Peabody Award at the 85th Annual Ceremony.
