Dune: Prophecy 2024
A 2026 American science fiction television series, Dune: Prophecy, was created by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, with Schapker taking on the role of showrunner and writer. The show is set within Frank Herbert's Dune universe and explores the beginnings of the Bene Gesserit, a significant social, religious, and political group known for their extraordinary abilities gained through rigorous physical and mental training. This series serves as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), occurring around 10,000 years before those films. It is based on, yet set after, the Great Schools of Dune trilogy published between 2012 and 2016 by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
Legendary Entertainment began developing a two-part film adaptation of the Dune books in 2016, with Villeneuve appointed as director by 2017. In 2019, Legendary Television commissioned the series as a spin-off connected to Villeneuve’s films. By that time, multiple creative talents had joined the project. After several creative changes, Schapker assumed the showrunner position, and Anna Foerster directed multiple episodes by June 2023. Casting occurred between November 2022 and June 2023, with principal photography starting in November 2022 in Budapest and Jordan and wrapping in December 2023.
The series premiered on HBO on November 17, 2024, receiving a mixed response from critics. In December 2024, it was announced that the show would return for a second season, scheduled to air in 2026.
