Creature Commandos is an American adult animated superhero television series crafted by James Gunn for the streaming platform HBO Max. The show adapts the titular monster team from DC Comics and marks the inaugural TV series within the DC Universe (DCU). It is developed by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. The narrative centers on a covert operations squad of creatures gathered by Amanda Waller. All seven episodes in the initial season were penned by Gunn, with Dean Lorey functioning as showrunner and Yves "Balak" Bigerel overseeing direction.
The ensemble cast comprises Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, David Harbour, and Frank Grillo. Following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking on co-CEO roles at DC Studios in October 2022, they unveiled Creature Commandos during January 2023. At that time, production was already underway with casting in progress. The complete cast was revealed that same April. Animation services were provided by Bobbypills and Studio IAM.
Premiering on HBO Max on December 5, 2024, the series debuted with its first two episodes. Critics responded favorably, highlighting voice performances, Gunn’s writing, and the emotional depth. It initiated DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. In December 2024, the series was ordered for a second season.
