Documentary

Cheer is a 2022 American sport television docuseries that premiered on Netflix in January 2020. The six-part show centers on the nationally ranked forty-member Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas, led by coach Monica Aldama as they gear up for the National Cheerleading Championship held yearly in Daytona Beach, Florida. Each episode highlights five team members while incorporating the history of cheerleading, particularly the founding of the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA).

The series opens with the team's impressive record of fourteen NCA National Championships in the "advanced large coed" junior college division and five "Grand Nationals" for top overall scores. Their main competitor in this division is Trinity Valley Community College located in Athens, Texas, about forty miles away. The final episode of season one examines Varsity Brands' dominant role in the billion-dollar cheerleading world—particularly after its acquisition by Bain Capital—which controls many aspects including broadcast rights for the Daytona finals. Season two launched on January 12, 2022. Certain episodes explore allegations of child sexual exploitation brought against first season standout Jerry Harris, who was subsequently sentenced to 12 years behind bars in July 2022.
