NHL on TNT 2021
NHL on TNT is a live sports telecast featuring National Hockey League games, produced by TNT Sports—formerly known as Turner Sports—and broadcast on TNT while also available through HBO Max in the United States.
In 2021, Turner Sports signed a seven-year agreement to become one of two rights holders for NHL content in the United States, alongside ESPN/ABC, replacing NBC Sports. Under this deal, TNT will broadcast up to 72 nationally televised regular-season games each season, along with the annual NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day, half of the Stanley Cup playoffs (shown on TNT and TBS), and the Stanley Cup Final in odd-numbered years. HBO Max has the option to carry or simulcast selected matches.
Turner Sports previously aired hockey as the regional broadcaster for the Atlanta Flames and Atlanta Thrashers, and as the cable provider for Olympic ice hockey from 1992–1998 on CBS. The company also held local rights through AT&T SportsNet regional sports networks until the end of the 2022–23 season for teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins (now with SportsNet Pittsburgh), Seattle Kraken (now on KING-TV and KONG-TV), and Vegas Golden Knights (now on over-the-air channel Vegas 34). Nonetheless, this was the first time Turner Sports secured a national NHL contract.
As with other U.S. NHL broadcasts, games on TNT may be seen in Canada via Sportsnet or streamed on Sportsnet+ under a 12-year agreement that extends through 2025–26. That deal was later extended for another 12 years, running to the 2037–38 season, although blackout rules apply when Canadian teams appear in TNT broadcasts.
