The Green Planet 2022
A 2022 British nature documentary series, The Green Planet, explores plant life and its connections to animals and ecosystems. It was co-commissioned by the BBC and PBS, with production handled by BBC Studios Natural History Unit in collaboration with Open University, CCTV-9, Bilibili, ZDF, France Télévisions and NHK. David Attenborough served as narrator and presenter.
The series uses time-lapse filming, drones, and custom-built camera systems known as "Triffids" to capture plant behavior over extended timescales, accelerated into real-time viewing. It premiered on BBC One on 9 January 2022 with five episodes. The show became available on BBC iPlayer and was broadcast internationally by various networks.
Filming required three years and occurred across 27 countries. Producer Paul Williams worked with engineer Chris Field to create new technology for the series, using a prototype "Triffid" camera system showcased in a Kickstarter video. Music was composed by Benji Merrison and Will Slater. A promotional augmented reality experience in London and online content were also developed.
In the UK, the first episode attracted 5.4 million viewers. Critics praised its production values, narrative approach, and ecological themes. A sequel titled Green Planet II is currently in development.
