A 2022 American superhero film, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman and is directed by Matt Reeves. The screenplay was written by Matt Reeves in collaboration with Peter Craig, and the movie is a reboot of the Batman film series based on the DC Comics character. Supporting cast includes Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. The story centers on Batman during his second year in Gotham City, investigating corruption connected to his own family while tracking the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer and terrorist aiming at the city's wealthy elite. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film was produced by Reeves and Dylan Clark for DC Films.

A Batman movie for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was announced in October 2014, with Ben Affleck cast as the main character. By 2016, Affleck committed to direct, produce, and co-write The Batman, but later withdrew due to concerns about the project in January 2017. Reeves assumed direction shortly after and reimagined the story, removing ties to the DCEU and focusing on an earlier version of Batman compared to Affleck’s portrayal. Reeves collaborated with Peter Craig and Mattson Tomlin on the script, emphasizing Batman's detective role, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, New Hollywood films, and comics including "Year One" (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), and Ego (2000).

Following Affleck’s exit as lead in January 2019, Robert Pattinson was cast in May, with additional actors joining later that year. Principal photography occurred from January 2020 to March 2021, but filming paused for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production took place across the United Kingdom, including England and Scotland, as well as at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Cinematographer Greig Fraser used Industrial Light & Magic's StageCraft virtual production technology, while Michael Giacchino composed the soundtrack. The film contains over 1,500 visual effects shots and ranks among the longest superhero films ever made. An extensive viral marketing campaign supported the movie during and after production.

Due to delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, The Batman premiered in the United States on March 4, 2022, three days after its Lincoln Center debut in New York City. Critics responded positively, praising Reeves’s direction, Pattinson and Kravitz's performances, and the cinematography and music, although some noted criticism regarding tone, runtime, and third act execution. The film’s portrayal of Batman and its themes on class conflict and inequality were analyzed by commentators. It was a box office success, earning over $772 million worldwide against a $185–200 million budget, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2022 and Warner Bros.'s top pandemic release. The movie set multiple pandemic-era box office records, especially for IMAX screenings. The Batman received three Academy Award nominations and numerous other honors. It is intended to begin a trilogy and shared universe titled the "Batman Epic Crime Saga". A sequel, The Batman: Part II, is scheduled for February 18, 2028, while a spin-off series starring Farrell, The Penguin, launched on HBO in late 2024.
