A 2022 black tragicomedy film, The Banshees of Inisherin was directed, written, and co-produced by Martin McDonagh. It takes place on a fictional island off the west coast of Ireland in 1923 and features Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two friends whose relationship reaches a breaking point when one abruptly ends their friendship, resulting in serious consequences for both. Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan appear in supporting roles. This project brings back Farrell and Gleeson, who previously worked together in McDonagh’s 2008 directorial effort In Bruges.

The film made its debut on 5 September 2022 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. During the event, Farrell received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and McDonagh was honored with the Best Screenplay award. The movie opened in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States on 21 October 2022 through Searchlight Pictures. Critics responded positively, especially praising McDonagh’s direction and screenplay, the acting, and Carter Burwell's musical score. Worldwide earnings totaled $52 million, following an $20 million budget.

The Banshees of Inisherin earned nine nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, it took home three honors: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor – Musical or Comedy (Farrell), and Best Screenplay. It also secured four BAFTA Awards from ten nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards, winning Outstanding British Film, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Keoghan), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Condon), and Best Original Screenplay.

The film was recognized as one of the Top Ten Films of 2022 by the National Board of Review. It has since been considered among the finest works of the 2020s and 21st centuries.
