Smile 2022
Psychological horrorSupernatural horror
A 2022 American supernatural psychological horror film, Smile is written and directed by Parker Finn in his first feature film effort. The project follows up on Finn’s 2020 short Laura Hasn't Slept and stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who sees a patient commit suicide in an odd way, leading to her experiencing terrifying visions that suggest something beyond normal reality. The cast also includes Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, with Caitlin Stasey returning from the earlier short.
Announced as a feature version of Finn’s short in June 2020, the film's casting was finalized in October 2021. Principal photography started in New Jersey that same month and wrapped in November. Originally planned for a release on Paramount+, the distributor Paramount Pictures opted to screen it in theaters after favorable test screenings.
Smile debuted at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022 and opened in U.S. theaters on September 30. Critics responded positively, and the film earned over $217 million globally against a $17 million budget. A sequel titled Smile 2, produced without Paramount Players, hit cinemas in 2024. A third installment is now being developed.
