Science fiction actionSuperhero

A 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character, Morbius is the third movie in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The production involved Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment, Arad Productions, and Matt Tolmach Productions, and was distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. Jared Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius, with Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson also starring. Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the story follows Morbius and his surrogate brother Milo (Smith) who transform into living vampires after attempting to cure a rare blood disease.

Two previous attempts to bring Morbius to the big screen occurred since 1998: one as an antagonist in the Blade series and another solo film produced by Artisan Entertainment, though neither ever made it to release. Following Sony's announcement of a new shared universe inspired by Spider-Man characters beginning with Venom (2018), work began on a Morbius movie. Sazama and Sharpless had written a script by November 2017, before Leto and Espinosa officially joined in June 2018. Production started at year-end, with additional casting completed ahead of filming beginning in London in February 2019. Filming wrapped by June 2019, followed by reshoots in Los Angeles during February June 2019. Jon Ekstrand composed the soundtrack.

Morbius had its premiere at Plaza Carso in Mexico City on March 10, 2022, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on April 1, after several delays from an original July 2020 date, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics largely criticized the writing, visual effects, and post-credits scenes, though Smith’s performance received some recognition. The film failed at the box office, grossing $167.5 million worldwide against a production budget ranging from $75 to 83 million. Its poor reception sparked internet memes, prompting Sony to re-release the film in theaters on June 3, 2022, which also resulted in another box-office failure. The movie was later nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, winning Worst Actor for Leto and Worst Supporting Actress for Arjona.
