Hellraiser 2022
A 2022 supernatural horror film, Hellraiser is the eleventh entry in its franchise, adapted from the 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker. Directed by David Bruckner, the movie features a screenplay written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, with additional collaboration from David S. Goyer. The story follows Odessa A'zion, a young woman recovering from addiction, who encounters a mechanical puzzle box that summons the Cenobites—sadomasochistic humanoid creatures who find joy in pain. Supporting cast includes Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Jason Liles, Yinka Olorunnife, Selina Lo, Zachary Hing, Kit Clarke, Goran Višnjić, and Hiam Abbass.
Initial plans for a remake surfaced in October 2007, with Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo attached as directors, while Barker produced and Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton handled the script. After Maury and Bustillo exited the project, Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier took over, aiming for an early 2012 release. However, after Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) was released to maintain franchise rights, Farmer and Lussier dropped out. By 2018, following the success of Halloween, Miramax confirmed new Hellraiser films were in development. The project was officially greenlit in early 2019 under Bruckner’s direction, with a script by Collins and Piotrowski. Production later shifted to Hulu, involving Spyglass Media Group and Phantom Four Films. Principal photography occurred between September and October 2021.
Released in 2022, the film premiered at Fantastic Fest before being distributed across North America via Hulu, followed by releases in the United Kingdom and global markets through Spyglass and Paramount Pictures. Critics offered mixed reactions to the film.
