Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 animated musical dark fantasy film. The movie was directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, with screenplay written by del Toro and Patrick McHale, and story by del Toro and Matthew Robbins. It draws loose inspiration from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, and the main character's appearance is heavily shaped by illustrator Gris Grimly’s style. The narrative takes place in Fascist Italy during the interwar years. It tells the tale of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet brought to life as the son of his creator, Geppetto. Voice roles are performed by Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and David Bradley as Geppetto, joined by Ewan McGregor, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. This film marked the final credited work of Gustafson before his passing in 2024.
For del Toro, this project has been a long-held ambition; he has stated that no other character ever felt as personally significant to him as Pinocchio. The film is dedicated to remembering his parents. The announcement first came in 2008 with an intended release date of either 2013 or 2014. However, it encountered significant delays and entered development limbo. In January 2017, McHale was named as co-writer of the screenplay, but production halted in November 2017 due to a lack of financial support from studios. The project restarted the following year after being picked up by Netflix.
The film made its debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15, 2022. It opened in select theaters on November 9, and began streaming on Netflix starting December 9. Critics widely praised it for direction, writing, voice acting, animation, production design, musical elements, and how it preserved the darker tone of the original. Among its many awards, Pinocchio was honored with Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Critic's Choice Awards, and PGA Awards.
