Emily the Criminal 2022
A 2022 American crime thriller film, Emily the Criminal was written and directed by John Patton Ford in his first feature film effort. Starring Aubrey Plaza as the main character, the movie also features Theo Rossi, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Gina Gershon in supporting roles. The story centers on Emily Benetto, a young woman burdened by student loans and blocked from employment because of her criminal history. She becomes part of a credit card fraud operation that draws her into Los Angeles’s criminal world.
The film made its world premiere at the 38th Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2022, then opened in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2022 through Roadside Attractions and Vertical Entertainment. Critics responded favorably, especially noting the script and Plaza's acting. At the 38th Independent Spirit Awards, it received four nominations, including Best First Feature, with Ford taking home Best First Screenplay.
