Biographical drama

Elvis is a 2022 musical epic biographical drama film co-produced and directed by Baz Luhrmann, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner. The film follows the life of American singer and actor Elvis Presley while under the management of Colonel Tom Parker. Austin Butler portrays Presley, and Tom Hanks plays Parker, with Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, David Wenham, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Luke Bracey appearing in supporting roles.

A biographical film about Presley was first announced in 2014, with Luhrmann attached to direct. The project remained in development limbo until early 2019, when Hanks joined the production. Butler was cast as Presley in July of that year, outperforming actors such as Miles Teller and Harry Styles. Principal photography started in Australia in January 2020 but halted in March due to Hanks testing positive for COVID-19 at the pandemic's outset. Production resumed in September and concluded in March 2021.

The film had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 25 May 2022, followed by releases in Australia on 23 June and in the United States on 24 June through Warner Bros. Pictures. Critics responded positively, and the movie proved commercially successful, earning over $288 million worldwide against an $85 million budget. The American Film Institute recognized Elvis as one of the top-ten films of 2022. At the 95th Academy Awards, the film received eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Butler, along with many other honors.

A stage adaptation is currently in development, with Luhrmann producing. During the making of Elvis, Luhrmann discovered previously unseen Presley footage that became the foundation for a documentary titled EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which was released in September 2025.
