Historical drama

A 2022 historical drama film, Downton Abbey: A New Era stars Simon Curtis as director and Julian Fellowes as screenwriter. It continues the story from Downton Abbey (2019), marking the second entry in the franchise. The narrative takes place in 1928, focusing on the Crawley family's trip to southern France to investigate the origins of the Dowager Countess’s recently acquired estate.

Following the success of the initial movie in 2019, Fellowes and cast members expressed interest in developing a follow-up. In January 2020, reports surfaced that Fellowes had started working on the script, which was later confirmed to be completed by September. Principal photography commenced in mid-April 2021 and concluded in July, with a production cost of $40 million. The movie's name became public shortly after.

The film had its premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on 25 April 2022, followed by a UK release on 29 April and an American debut on 20 May through Focus Features. Critics responded favorably, with the film earning $92.7 million globally. The final installment, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, appeared on 12 September 2025.
