Disenchanted is a 2022 American live-action/animated musical fantasy drama film that serves as a sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted. Directed by Adam Shankman and written by Brigitte Hales, the project is based on a story by Richard LaGravenese and the writing team of J. David Stem and David N. Weiss. The film was co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Josephson Entertainment, and Right Coast Productions.
Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel return to their roles from the first movie, with Gabriella Baldacchino stepping into the role of Rachel Covey—though Covey appears in a cameo as a different character. Additional cast members include Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, Kolton Stewart, Oscar Nunez, and Griffin Newman. Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken return as songwriters, while Alan Menken composed the film's musical score. Adams also produced the film alongside Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld.
Development of an Enchanted sequel started in early 2010 but stalled for years. In 2017, Adams was confirmed to reprise her role, with filming set for summer, though that never happened. The project was officially announced in December 2020. Casting took place in spring 2021, and principal photography occurred in Ireland from May through July of that year.
The film had its premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 16, 2022 and was made available in the United States through Disney+ on November 18. Critics generally gave it negative reviews, appreciating Adams’s performance but noting that it failed to match the original's charm and humor.
