A Minecraft Movie represents a 2025 adventure comedy motion picture derived from the 2011 video game Minecraft, created and distributed by Mojang Studios. The film was directed by Jared Hess, with screenwriting contributions from Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, and is based on a narrative concept by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer. Starring Jason Momoa (also functioning as one of the producers), Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, the story centers on four individuals from the imaginary town of Chuglass, Idaho, who are transported through a gateway into a blocky realm. They must then journey to return to their original world with assistance from a specialist named Steve.
Development of a cinematic version began in 2014 when game designer Markus Persson disclosed that Mojang Studios was negotiating with Warner Bros. for the project. During production, multiple directors, producers, and story versions were considered. By 2022, Legendary Entertainment entered the picture, with Hess appointed as director and Momoa being discussed for a role. Additional casting occurred between May 2023 and January 2024. Principal filming commenced in New Zealand later that month and concluded in April 2024. Mark Mothersbaugh created the musical score, while Sony Pictures Imageworks, Wētā FX, and Digital Domain handled visual effects.
A Minecraft Movie made its debut in London on March 30, 2025, followed by releases in the United States and Sweden on April 4 through Warner Bros. Pictures. Critics offered varied responses to the film, yet it performed well financially, earning approximately $961million and ranking as the fifth-highest-grossing production of 2025, while also becoming the third most profitable video game adaptation ever made. Furthermore, it became a cultural moment among Generation Z, sparking what was termed the "Chicken Jockey" trend. A follow-up film, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, is set to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.
