DC League of Super-Pets is a 2022 American animated superhero film based on DC Comics characters. The movie was directed by Jared Stern, who also co-wrote the script with John Whittington. Dwayne Johnson provides the voice for Krypto, while a supporting cast including Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Marc Maron, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, and Keanu Reeves lend their voices to various characters. The story follows Superman's pet dog Krypto and a shelter dog named Ace as they team up with other animals to rescue captured superheroes from Lex Luthor and Lulu.
In the early days of Warner Animation Group, Stern developed the concept for the film in 2012 after working at an animal shelter, where he observed how older pets often went unadopted and imagined what might happen if these animals had superpowers. He was then hired to write and direct a movie featuring DC's Legion of Super-Pets in July 2018. Sam J. Levine and Patricia Hicks joined the project in January 2019 as co-director and producer, respectively. Johnson signed on to voice Krypto in May 2021, and additional main cast members were confirmed by June 2021, including Hart, McKinnon, Krasinski, Bayer, Lyonne, Luna, Maron, and Reeves.
The film’s animation style was inspired by Art Deco architecture and illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. Animation was handled by Animal Logic. The movie premiered at the AMC The Grove in Los Angeles, California on July 13, 2022, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 29. Critics gave it generally positive reviews, and it earned over $207 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. DC League of Super-Pets marked the final fully animated film released under the Warner Animation Group label before it was renamed Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in 2023.
