Amsterdam is a 2022 mystery comedy thriller film written, produced, and directed by David O. Russell. The movie features Christian Bale (also a producer), Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, along with a supporting ensemble cast. Inspired by the Business Plot, a 1933 political conspiracy in the United States, the story centers on three friends—a doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer—who come together to investigate the death of a retired U.S. general.
Principal photography took place in Los Angeles between January and March 2021. This marked Russell’s return to filmmaking after Joy (2015). The film had its premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 18, 2022 before opening in theaters across the United States on October 7 through 20th Century Studios. Critics responded negatively, faulting Russell's direction and screenplay, as well as the lack of on-screen chemistry between Robbie and Washington. The movie failed commercially, resulting in an estimated loss exceeding $100 million for the studio.
