Evil Dead Rise 2023
Dark fantasyHorrorSupernatural horror
Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Lee Cronin and written by Cronin as well. It continues the Evil Dead franchise, following the 2013 film and serving as the fifth movie in the series. The story features Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland portraying two sisters who are separated but must work together to protect their family from the Deadites. Supporting roles include Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher, who makes her debut in a film role.
The project originated from earlier canceled plans for sequels to both Evil Dead (2013) and Army of Darkness (1992), along with a fourth season of Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018). In October 2019, Sam Raimi confirmed that a new movie was in development. Rob Tapert was producing the film, while Raimi and Bruce Campbell served as executive producers. New Line Cinema, which distributed the first film, also participated in production. Principal photography occurred in New Zealand between June and October 2021. Originally scheduled for HBO Max, the release was shifted to theaters after favorable test screenings by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Evil Dead Rise had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 15, 2023, followed by a U.S. release on April 21 through Warner Bros. Pictures. Critics responded positively, and it earned $147 million globally, becoming the most successful film in the franchise. The movie received nominations at the 51st Saturn Awards, including Best Horror Film and Best Make-up. A sixth entry titled Evil Dead Burn was released on July 10, 2026. The film uses music composed by Stephen McKeon and has a runtime of 96 minutes. It is an international production involving New Zealand, Ireland, and the United States.
