Superman is a 2025 American superhero motion picture written and directed by James Gunn. It is based on the DC Comics hero Superman and represents the inaugural cinematic entry in the DC Universe (DCU), serving as a reboot of the Superman film franchise. David Corenswet portrays Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman, with additional roles played by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. Within the storyline, Superman encounters unforeseen outcomes following his involvement in an international conflict manipulated by billionaire Lex Luthor (Hoult). He needs to regain public trust with assistance from his journalist colleague and fellow superheroes. The production was handled by Gunn along with Peter Safran of DC Studios.
Work on a follow-up to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie Man of Steel (2013) commenced by October 2014, featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. However, developments shifted after issues during the making of Justice League (2017), leading to cancellation of the Man of Steel sequel by May 2020. Around August 2022, Gunn initiated work on a fresh Superman film. In October, he assumed co-CEO duties at DC Studios alongside Safran and started developing a new DC Universe. Gunn publicly disclosed his role as screenwriter in December. The title Superman: Legacy was unveiled the following month; Gunn was confirmed as director in March 2023, and Corenswet and Brosnahan (portraying Lois Lane) were announced as cast members that June. By the end of February 2024, the subtitle was removed, coinciding with principal photography beginning in Svalbard, Norway. Main production occurred at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, complemented by location scenes throughout Georgia and Ohio. Filming concluded in July. Significant comic inspirations for the movie include All-Star Superman (2005–2008) created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely and also Superman: Birthright (2003–2004) authored by Mark Waid, Leinil Francis Yu, and Gerry Alanguilan.
The film made its debut at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025 and was issued in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 11. It marks the first installment of DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The movie earned $618.7million globally, placing it among the ten most successful films of 2025, and garnered generally favorable critiques. Reviewers noted its enjoyment, vibrancy, and sincerity, though some considered it overly packed; nonetheless, the acting by Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult was lauded. A sequel titled Man of Tomorrow is set for release in 2027, along with two spin-off television shows focusing on supporting figures from the film: The People v. Gorilla Grodd starring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and another centered on Gathegi's Michael Holt / Mister Terrific.
