Fantasy adventure

How to Train Your Dragon is a 2025 fantasy adventure motion picture and a live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film created by DreamWorks Animation, which draws inspiration from the 2003 novel authored by Cressida Cowell. The movie was penned and led by Dean DeBlois, who also co-wrote and directed the original animation. Stars include Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Peter Serafinowicz, and Nick Frost, with Gerard Butler returning to portray Stoick the Vast.

The story unfolds on the harsh Isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have long been adversaries. Hiccup (Thames), an inventive but underappreciated son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Butler), forms a connection with Toothless, a formidable Night Fury dragon. This unexpected friendship exposes the real essence of dragons, questioning the core beliefs of Viking culture.

The initiative for a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon was unveiled in February 2023, with DeBlois returning as screenwriter and director. Longtime composer John Powell also came back to compose the soundtrack. Thames and Parker were confirmed as cast members in May 2023, followed by further casting announcements in January 2024. Principal photography commenced later that same month in Belfast, Northern Ireland, concluding in May. It marks DreamWorks Animation's first live-action production since its separation from the original live-action studio in 2004.

How to Train Your Dragon debuted at CinemaCon on April 2, 2025, and was issued by Universal Pictures within the United States on June 13. Critics responded favorably, and it earned $636.4 million globally, making it the eighth-most successful film of 2025 and the second-highest-grossing live-action/animated hybrid in history. The film garnered a nod for Best Special Visual Effects at the 79th British Academy Film Awards. A follow-up titled How to Train Your Dragon 2, adapting the 2014 animated sequel, is set for release on June 11, 2027.
