Drama

Hamnet represents a 2025 historical drama film under the direction of Chloé Zhao, who collaborated on the screenplay with Maggie O'Farrell adapted from the 2020 novel by O'Farrell. The narrative explores the domestic experiences of William Shakespeare and his spouse Agnes Hathaway during their grief over the passing of their 11-year-old offspring Hamnet. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal portray Agnes and William respectively, with Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, and Jacobi Jupe appearing in secondary capacities.

The movie made its initial appearance at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival on 29 August 2025 and commenced a restricted cinema showing through Focus Features within the United States and Canada on 26 November. A broader theatrical presentation followed on 5 December, while Universal Pictures distributed it in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2026. Reviews proved favorable, especially highlighting Buckley's acting. The production earned various honors, including the Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Buckley at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, along with eight nods at the 98th Academy Awards, such as Best Picture and Best Director for Zhao, with Buckley securing the Oscar for Best Actress.
