The Circle 2017
DramaScience fiction dramaThriller
A 2017 American techno-thriller film, The Circle was directed by James Ponsoldt and features a screenplay co-written by Ponsoldt and Dave Eggers based on Eggers's 2013 novel. Starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, alongside John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Ellar Coltrane, Patton Oswalt, Glenne Headly, and Bill Paxton, the film made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 26, 2017 before opening in theaters on April 28, 2017 through STXfilms and EuropaCorp. Critics responded negatively, with domestic earnings reaching $20.5 million in the United States and Canada, plus $25 million from international markets, totaling $45.5 million, despite a production cost of $18 million. This became director Ponsoldt's most financially successful feature to date. The movie was released posthumously for Paxton, who passed away in February 2017, while it marked the final film featuring Headly before her death in June 2017.
